Human demand on nature has exceeded what the planet can regenerate. This ecological overshoot is a root cause of many of today’s major challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, resource insecurity, and growing economic instability. Overshoot therefore defines the context in which we operate.
Regeneration defines the budget
The ultimate physical constraint on the human economy is the regenerative capacity of ecosystems. Nature’s ability to renew resources sets the broad resource budget within which humanity operates. It not only limits how much fiber and food we can consume but also how much fossil fuel can be burned and how much mining can occur because the extraction process is much more limiting than the amounts left underground.
Like a financial budget, this limit can be exceeded for a time, but doing so comes at a cost and cannot continue indefinitely. Understanding this budget provides a clearer view of the risks and opportunities facing society…
