East Africa’s vibrant and diverse food culture is being put at risk as climate change threatens the region’s most important crops. Teff, matoke, cassava and maize—staples of many East African mealtimes—are vulnerable to rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, and the spread of pests and diseases—risks that can all be intensified by climate change.
The result can mean smaller harvests, lost income for farmers, and food insecurity for the communities who have enjoyed these foods for generations.
Climate change is also bad for businesses. SMEs, manufacturers, food processors, and distributors are all facing real risks stemming from smaller harvests and disrupted supply chains. Some crops, like tea and coffee, are not only local favourites but also major regional exports, supporting millions of farming families and forming the backbone of national economies…
